Panel Discussion: What Does Diversity Mean in Emergency Medicine?

Presentation

Presentation Description

Moderated by Dr Lai Heng Foong.

Emergency medicine is a fast-paced, high-stress environment where quick and accurate decisions are crucial. The diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences of healthcare professionals in the emergency room can lead to more effective patient care and innovative solutions. However, unconscious bias can hinder these benefits. Unconscious bias refers to the subtle, often unintentional prejudices that influence our judgments and actions. In emergency medicine, this can lead to disparities in patient treatment and outcomes.

Recognizing and mitigating unconscious bias is vital for promoting diversity and inclusion. By fostering a culture of awareness and education, emergency medicine doctors can work together more effectively, minimize disparities, and provide equitable care to all patients, regardless of their backgrounds. Embracing diversity and actively addressing unconscious bias in emergency medicine is not just a moral imperative but a necessary step towards delivering the best possible care in the emergency department.

Additionally, this session will champion the Diversity Survey report, the first of any medical college in Australia or New Zealand had completed. The survey created to review the dimensions that differentiate groups of people or individuals from one another and can include different ages, cultural backgrounds, and ethnicity. Approximately 15% of ACEM’s membership contributed to this survey, however it is a good start, we will continue to build on as the College progresses. The findings from this report will provide a baseline of diversity data of the College membership. It will inform the College’s future work in promoting a fairer, more diverse, and more inclusive emergency medicine workforce.

To genuinely meet the needs of all people in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, and ensure representation, agency, dignity, and respect for all peoples, our workforce must reflect the diversity inherent in our two nations.
